ECO (Energy Company Obligation) is the government’s programme to make houses in the UK more energy efficient. Recently, the scheme has focused on targeting energy efficiency measures in lower income and more vulnerable households. ECO3 replaces previous schemes which ran until December 2018.

The current scheme, called ECO3, launched in December 2018 and runs until 31 March 2022. This scheme’s sole focus is on customers with lower incomes who are considered to be in vulnerable situations or living in fuel poverty.

In total, 6.5 million households are eligible with the scheme’s plan to make energy-saving improvements to 900,000 homes.

The guidelines enforce that suppliers must deliver 15% of their ECO measures to homes in rural areas and 10% of them can be installing ‘innovative’ products such as devices to help homeowners manage their energy use.

Your energy supplier should inform you if you are eligible for an ECO grant but if you would like to understand more, visit Which? Energy Company Obligation (ECO).
